  1. there is a very limited over night service running at the minute though as said above it is a politcal issue now

  2. Royal Mail trains do still run, although at the moment they only run between the Princess Royal Distribution Centre in Willesden, London and Shieldmuir in Scotland. The trains also call at the Royal Mail terminal in Warrington.

There is currently one train each way a day, which is typically formed of Class 325 EMU's. These are 4-car units and can operate as upto 12 car units. The trains are actually operated by the railfreight company GB Railfreight (GBRf), and the trains are occasionally hauled dead by a Class 87 locomotive (either 87022 or 87028).

Over christmas, there were extra trains put on to accomodate the extra mail at that time and some trains were put up the East Coast, serving the Low Fell mail terminal on Tyneside.

Since the re-introduction of these limited trains, which usually only carry 2nd class mail i'm told, the trains have been extremely punctual and reliable.

The widespread re-introduction of mail on rail would need significant investment as many of the mail vans that were used originally were scrapped, or are not now fit for the purpose.

The Class 325's are only available for use on overhead-electrified lines, which would mean that they would need a diesel locomotive to haul them to anywhere else in the country.

  3. No I don't think so.

  4. No, the last one was a couple of years ago. It's mostly done by planes now.

  5. Yes: from the Princess Royal mail concentration centre at Stonebridge Park Brent Yard, Wembley (between Harlesden and Stonebridge Park stations). Yesterday (Thursday) there were two Class 325 trainsets inside the depot. They run as twelve car units. There is a spare set at the Alsthom depot at Willesden Junction, but this has had parts removed (especially from one of the  driving cabs) which means that it cannot be used operationally.

The P.O.U.R. (between Paddington and Whitechapel via Mount Pleasant) has been mothballed, but could be brought back into use.

  6. Whilst EWS lost the contract to move the mail by train, a very limited number have restarted run by, I think Freighliner, using the dedicated  Royal Mail EMUs. No, the Post Office Underground Railway doesn't run any longer - that finished before mail on the , the main line on 30 May 2003, whilst the main line services finished on the night of 9/10 January 2004

  7. No they finished a year or two ago.

  8. They do run in some parts of the country but it is a very limited service as they have found other ways to transport the post.

  9. they stopped it a few years ago.

the underground rail line in london (mailrail) still exists but doesn't run anymore although they were talking about reopening it but i think that fell through as it'd be too expensive to run

  10. They stopped Mail trains a few years ago and found it more efficient to go by air or road

  11. Royal Mail train service discontinued in 2004 and was reintroduced in 2005, running between England & Scotland.  Still going but has become a political football.  Believe it will stay in some limited form of service.

  12. I think they still run underground royal mail trains in london
