Question:

Do they sell ready-made non-subcription DVRs?

I have basic cable and the service does not provide a built-in dvr option. I do not want to subscribe to any thing, I don't need the schedule interface (I can look up on-line when shows are on) and I don't want to have to build my own out of a computer.

Do they sell simple DVRs, that you can program in an old-VCR-like way? Please suggest some....

  1. If you can find a Toshiba SD-H400 TiVo unit, it can do what you want. Its one of the only TiVo units that can be run without subscribing to a service. The basic service with it is free, but only has 2 days of programming schedules. But you can always manually program it. You may have to find it used on eBay.

You might also check the Hauppage HD PVR.

  2. Walmart carries three models. They are all listed as DVD recorders with hard drives. You can record to either the hard drive or to DVDs.
