Hi. I'm from D.C. and am visiting Toronto next month. Do they speak English in Toronto or should I memorize a few phrases in the local language to communicate better? If so, what do Canadians speak? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  6. Canadians speak Esperanto as their primary language except those in Quebec who speak Mandarin but with a different accent than you'd find in China. Typically Canadians will be able to speak English so you should be able to get by.

Here are a few helpful phrases if you want to impress your hosts:

"Please take me to my hotel" - Gheenaj takk tonar reencha haraka.

"How much is that?" - Spaceeba shaken to hoken?

"I'm not from around here." - I'm an American that really doesn't understand how the world works so wind up asking stupid questions about things that are rather obvious.

In other words, Canadians speak English unless you go to Quebec in which case they speak primarily French.
