Yes the national language is French but every "Region" of France (example : Brittany, Alsace....etc...) have their own language as well.

My grand-mother and my mother both speak fluently Breton and French.

Most of French are also able to speak another European language shuch as English, Spanish,German, Italian etc.... because it is an obligation for every french children to learn two foreign languages at school.

French will NOT be rude if you ask for help in English. Just make sure before you ask that this person understand English because that person can speak only French and German or French and Italian.

To Sotires : The CIA web site is wrong.

Regionals languages are still very active in France.

You can even choose to pass your school exams in French or in one of those regional dialects.

Breton is my Grand-Mother's and was my Grand-Father's maternal language, They both learned French when they started school at the age of 6.
