Well, there have always been mafias, and they haven't always been Italian...in fact, the first mafias in the US weren't Italian at all.

But yes, the italian mafia is a very real problem in Northern New Jersey still (Sopranos wasn't all incorrect) and there are still some types of African drug Mafias throughout the country. There isn't really an Irish mafia in the US anymore, but there is in Europe.

Unfortunately for Russia, the Russian mafia is a very real and dangerous problem in Russia. Those guys practically run Russia (and control the government there) It is pretty scary, actually. fortunately the mafia isn't a very serious problem in the US like it is in Russia.
