I have a long lay over and wanted to do a little shopping. Do I need to get pesos? I've been to other touristy cities in mexico and everyone seems to be fine taking US dollars, but I've never been that far in the interior.

  1. If you use dollars you will be spening more money.  if you use your ATM card to get cash in pesos out, you get the best exchange rate. When you pay in dollars, merchants just figute 10 pesos to the dollar. in reality curently one dollar is about 10.8 or 10. 9 pesos.  Adds up.

  2. You can spend US dollars almost anywhere in the city. Like my friend "Charlie" pointed out you might not get the best rate, but most places will give you a fairly decent break (they want your business) so its often 10.50 or so.

Be very careful when using ATM machines. 10-15 years ago this was absolutely the best way to change dollars, safe and you got the best bank rate on the exchange. For the last few years most banks, Mexican and International have begun adding huge fees and percentage charges that can literally cost as much as 20% of the exchange on smaller amounts! Be careful!

If you are worried about the exchange you can always change money right at the airport or at any bank in any mall.

Three hours to the airport, what a load of BS! You can WALK to the airport in less than three hours! In rush hour the worst it will be is an hour, but you NEVER want to be stuck in Mexico City rush hour anyway - plan ahead. On off hours it will take you between 20 minutes to half an hour!

  3. Some cities do and dont! And if they do they will take it at 10.00 pesos or less and not at the current rate which is i think at 10.90...so u'r getting ripped off...so u'r better  off changing your money...but dont do it at airports...another rip off!!

  4. If you haven't been to Mexico City, I wouldn't stray far from the airport....Yes, US$ are taken......be careful where you go.

  5. you may be able to find someone who will take them, but like someone else said, you'll end up paying more.

how long is your layover?  over 8 hours i hope.  it can take up to three hours to get to the airport because traffic is so terrible, and unpredictable.  on the map, it should be less than 30 minutes...but it's never that fast.

  6. They take it everywhere in Mexico City.

  7. NO but you can change you dollars at "casa de cambio" or the bank (recomend the "casa de cambio")
