  1. generally no. it's just part of their tradition.

  2. no its rude to tip. because if you tip it makes you look like your telling them they look like they need the money.

  3. Combine all these answers and you got it.  Its part of their culture that its rude to tip.  Like you're saying that the tip is all that their service is worth.  But in the gaijin (foreigner) areas, it is more 'acceptable' because people still do it. Like in Roppongi where half of the people are white, for example.

    Dang gaijins!

  4. No necessary. Employee has enough salary from owner so they don't need to rely on individual customer at all.

Exception is for  Ryokan style hotel room keepers. It is a kind of manner.

    Nightclubs girls may be same.

  5. i was in a taxi with some friends and our taxi driver was helping us find this onsen outside of the city at night. it was pretty hard. guy was friendly too.

he went out of the way to help us so we tipped the guy. he was happy.

but normally.... i don't tip in japan.

  6. Absolutely not. One of their stiff-necked traditions.

  7. Not really. Often what you find is service charge gets included in your receipt.
