I'm traveling to Ireland/Wales/London this summer and I was wondering if they use military time there. (Also wondering what the time difference is in the summer, but I think I could figure that one out...)

  1. Not sure what you mean by "military time". No idea where you're from, so "time difference" is impossible to say. It's 19:51 over here, anyway.

  2. Do you mean the "24 hour clock"?

  3. Military time, or the 24 hour clock as most Brits call it, is usually seen in formal documents (e.g. rail timetables) and on devices that display time (digital watches, digital alarm clocks, DVD recorders, etc).

It ISN'T used in everyday conversation, e.g. "meet me at twenty hundred hours at the pub for a pint of beer".

  4. Over here, we are GMT time... seeing as we're where time originated... well, sort of.

GMT is Greenwich Mean Time and is where all time zones are in relation to. It depends where you are as to what the time difference is. For example, New York is GMT-5, meaning that when it's 12 midday over here, it's only 7am in New York. We get the day first.

As for the military time thing, we call it the 24 hour clock, midnight being 00:00. We do use it, but like someone else said- it's mainly for transport and computer settings. Otherwise, we work in the 12 hour clock and just specify if we mean AM or PM (although most things are obvious by context- few people would meet for lunch at 1am, for example)

--- And to RichB- from now on, I think I might start saying "meet us in the pub at 20:00"... sounds far cooler

  5. The use of the 24 clock is normally only in written form on timetables for buses and trains, etc.

  6. The clocks go forward in the Spring and go back an hour in the Autumn (October), it won't make a difference to you if you're travelling during the Summer.

  7. Yup. They do, it can be called 24 Hour Clock, or Military time
