  1. yea people who are homeschooled are freaks

  2. no, i wouldn't think they are weird. alot of people get home schooled because regular school is too slow. I'm one of those people

  3. I would just wonder why they were homeschooled is all.

  4. No not a freak just underprivileged. There is a law being passed in California that will cut down on homeschooling, which is great, and also will hold the parents who insist on this type of education to be qualified to teach, which, of course, is how it should be and needs to be. So when I hear someone is home schooled I feel sorry for them for missing out on attending a normal, accredited school with their peers. I think many parents who homeschooling are not qualified and think more of themselves and their own convenience than they do of their child's right to a decent education.

  5. I would definitely not think it is weird or that you are a freak.

My son, who is now 19 was homeschooled  & being the ring of shootings here in Las Vegas, I know that it is just a matter of time before more students are homeschooled than in a classroom.

    Best wishes to you!

  6. I think I'm the wrong age to be answering this question. But even when I was middle school age I wouldn't think it was weird, probably because I *was* homeschooled.

I have gotten that "you were HOMESCHOOLED?!" reaction from people, but it was mostly because they were shocked I was so normal :p

I have run into some odd / socially awkward homeschoolers, but it has to do with family environment, not with the fact that they were homeschooled. As long as the parents aren't odd and the kids get to get out of the house and spend time with friends, they end up surprisingly normal (though with better SAT scores :p)

  7. Homeschooling denies your children the chance to be social beings.  When they get to highschool its not drinking or drugs that is the problem, but they can't make a friend either. There is a lot more to life than education (and in most "homeschools" religion).  Stop homeschooling your children everyone!!!!

  8. No.  But there are limitations; homeschooling is fine for elementary grades, marginal for middle school, and deficient for high school: no parent has the necessary knowledge to teach all of the subjects required.  Workarounds for this have involved bringing in outside experts in various fields, but this is a poor substitute for regular instruction from someone who has seriously studied the subject at hand, has taught it for years, and knows where the bodies are buried.

  9. no, one of my best friends was home schooled

  10. Being a homeschooler does not necessarily mean you are weird; although some tend to think that just because they don't know quite a bit about homeschooling.

Also, quite a few people believe that homeschoolers have little or no social life.  This is not true.  If homeschoolers never go anywhere, like, if their family does home church, or if they don't go to a prep school or a type of co-op put together by other homeschooling families.

But if they do do things other than just school at home, then they in fact have better social lives than a public or private schooled kid.  How?  Because these homeschooling kids are given the chance to socialize with other people besides their own age.  They have more experience with other ages.  I hope this makes sense; many people need to learn this point about homeschoolers.

  11. no, it dont matter....

  12. kids get homeschooled for all kinds of reasons.

  13. If you told me you are home-schooled, I would think "Well, at least there are some normal people out there; there are parents who care about their children". Note: that selfish parents will never home-school their kids, they want more time for themselves.

Here is why I think you are not weird:

The 2006 Program for International Student Assessment showed that U.S. 15-year-olds are behind their peers from many industrialized countries. The average science score of U.S. students lagged behind those in 16 of 30 countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a Paris-based group that represents the world's richest countries. US STUDENTS WERE FURTHER BEHIND IN MATH, (behind 23 other countries!).

Just research some statistics comparing US education to other industrialized countries, you will be appalled. I would not want my future kids in that system and be part of the government plan "to make us dumber and fearful and thus easier to govern".

  14. I would think that they have more than likely have better grammar and spelling skills than you are showing, presuming you are in middle school language arts/English classes.

  15. Actually I would have thought that it was great! I hated the public school system! I would have wanted to know how to become home schooled. I would not have thought anything bad of them.

I really wish there was more commercials and public information on home schooled children though, because sadly there are quite a bit of people that think the home schooled kids are lost and not properly educated. I know different, I have seen different. These kids are usually more advanced than others in equal grade levels as they (home schoolers) should be in. It is the comfortable, and one on one attention a home schooled child gets. In my opinion, home schooled kids are the ones that have the advantage!

  16. I think they're lucky.

As long as homeschooled kids have social experiences (like scouts or self defense classes at the Y), then there's nothing freakish about them.

  17. no i wouldnt think they were weird. i think they're more intelligent because they have less distractions. i mean.. the teacher is sitting right there next to you. you HAVE to pay attention. but yeh theyre missing out interactions with other classmates.

  18. theres different kinds of homeskooling ...theres independent studies were u go and work for 2 hours twice a week...but its only for ppl who get kiked out of regular school...its like continuation skool...it is not pretty...there is always fights...and ppl are kinda strange...i go there...

  19. yea i do. there won't be much exposure. in schools there are libraries and friends available to help in needs but not at home, you see.

  20. Probably you would be more likely to think the parents were weird than the kid. Kids have to do what their parents make them do.

  21. They would probably be just as stupid as a school kid.

  22. no, what makes them so different from you?

  23. Only a kid would think this is "weird"... parents choose to homeschool for all sorts of reasons and very few of them are weird in any way

  24. I am a homeschool mom who majored in Secondary Education, but instead of teaching in a public institution, I chose to homeschool. I think that the general public is very uninformed about homeschooling today, and still relies on the old stereotype of the "shy unsocialized hermetic homeschooler" who never leaves their home and has no friends. It is so inaccurate. My kids are very social and anything but shy! We live in a suburb of Kansas City, and there are hundreds, maybe thousands of other Hschoolers in our small area. Nationwide, there are millions of us. We are active members of several local groups for homeschool famlies, and we take part in at least one social activity every day, outside of our home. Activities are set up and organized by moms through yahoo email loops. Our local homeschool groups offers the following activities to name a small few; Girl and Boy Scout troops, 4H, campfire, bowling, gymnastics, swimming, horseback riding, art, choir, and gym classes, holiday parties, book clubs, a 2 hour long recess time every week, plus park days, field trips, picnics and academic fairs. These are just a few of the many things we do while everyone else is in school). When we are not doing our lessons, we are always on the go, and it is ironic that we call ourselves homeschoolers since we spend so much time away from home! Homeschoolers have the advantage of one on one personalized attention educationally, and we also dont have to waste a lot of time on discipline, paperwork, and busywork. We can get our lessons done in a couple hours each morning, and then get on with enjoying our hobbies and friends. We also have the advantage of making closer more meaningful friendships because our kids have the time for more playdates and outings, instead of sitting, bored and institutionalized behind a desk all day. I find it ridiculous that public schools are thought of as a great place to socialize! How can kids socialize when they have to sit silently and listen for 8 hours a day?? Homeschoolers have the time to learn at their own pace, to spend time with friends, and just be kids, without the pressures and negative influences of public school. Homeschool kids are not hermits and they are not freaky nerds. They are just really lucky kids who get to enjoy life and learning every day. No child is left behind in a homeschool, and socialization is the best reason to homeschool. Public school creates a harsh artificial society where children are raised by their peers. Homeschoolers live and learn in the real world. For more info, read the book; "The Well adjusted Child; The Social Benefits of Homeschooling", by Rachel Gathercole.

  25. Of course not!

Many students do not learn well in the chaotic environment of a school classroom.  However, not everyone has the luxury of having the choice to home school.

Be happy that you are able to.

    Best of Luck.

  26. No...homeschooling kids are probably smarter!

  27. My children were all home-schooled, and are perfectly normal, moving on through their education and into careers.  They are all different, but all succeeding in the life they have chosen, and in fact, are doing a lot better than many of their their public-schooled contemporaries.

The only "freakishness" seems to be they have much better vocabularies than their contemporaries, and more ability to quickly understand situations...oh...and they also still enjoy learning!
