i have been having shin problems and my physical therapist keeps telling me to rest and not run. the season is starting in about 2 weeks and i have done no conditioning thanks to my shins. i will basically have to start over and build my way back up to where i was and get good enough to race. im thinking that by the time im ready to race, the season will be almost over. plus i am not even good. i am one of the slowest people on the team. im thinking that i should just not do this season and get better on my own for next season. if i get really good for next season then i can can do it to the full instead of doing only half this season with all the stress of getting back for racing........??

  1. I would say no. I am in track and have a situation similar to yours. I decided to wait till next year. Also if your physical therapist is telling you to rest you should rest.

  2. I would still be on the team, but have your coach give you a easy work out to help recover. If you totally stop & rest, you will get lazy and not want to work next season....

Your team & coach will not be happy about you taking a season off. Everyone gets hurt in this sport... Even if some other teammates get hurt they keep running. Don't be a wuss, run.

Plus you sound like you really don't want to run, you just want to take the easy way out... How do you know it hurts to run if you haven't been training?

  3. I think you should wait til next season. It will be soo much better for you!

    :]

  4. a runner should rest and take rest regardless if they are the fastest or slowest. shin problems are common and easy to overcome (couple weeks of rest). learn from your mistake; evaluate your situation and find out why you are hurting. this way you will avoid it next season. take a break, relax and then train.

there's no reason to run in your condition. it will only worsen. you can even do permenate damage. this does not mean you have to give up the team completely-you can still support. you can probably be the manager. this way you can be informed, learn something and be part of the team without running.

good luck and don't underestimate your value. a little determination, training program and you will improve greatly next season:)

  5. its up to you. if you aren't going to do something else in the fall then i think you should go for it if you think you can. and hey even if you aren't that good or even if it makes it so you cant run I'm sure your team would just like having you there. and i mean its something you love i don't see how you can stay away... that's my opion though... also if you dont think you are up for running this season talk to your coach maybe you can be the manager or something if you still want to be involved.  good luck hope everything turns out ok!
