  2. Are you asking about free standing room air cleaners, or the filter that goes in your furnace/air conditioner?

For furnace filters, yes they work.

For room air cleaners, no, I don't think they work as well as normal filter-type air purifiers.  Here's why I think that:

First of all, ionic filters work by creating an electric charge between metal plates.   Yes, they do collect dirt, but as the dirt accumulates, the metal plates become insulated by all the dust and become less effective.

Secondly, in order to clean the air in a room, ALL the air in the room has to move through the filter several times per hour.  This is measured as A.C.H. (air changes per hour).  You need an ACH of at least 4 to be effective.   Those ionic "breeze" filters are typically not in that range.

Third, the filter and fan system has to be designed such that it doesn't suck in the clean air.  You want to suck in the dirty air and blow out the clean air separately.   Otherwise, you end up cleaning the same air over and over and not getting the rest of the dirty air in the room.

I use conventional filter based air cleaners.   AllergyBuyersClub.com has lots of choices.
