Do tiger barbs nip fins?

Would they nip the long thin wispy fins on gouramis and angelfish? Would the nip/bite the tails of mollies, guppies, platies, or tetras? As much info as possible. Thank you!

  1. You do not want to place tiger barbs in a tank with the fishes you have mentioned. They are all non-aggressive fish. While the tiger barb is a more aggressive fish and it will nip fins and may cause other fish problems to your non-aggressive fish. I have a real hard time placing catfish in my barb tank because of the fact that they kill them all the time. Go to your nearest pet shop or call them to find out which fish work well with betta's.

  2. They are mean little b@stards. They killed two Anglefish in my other tank, so I dropped them in a tank with my giant Convict Cichlid.

  3. not a good community fish.

    Classed as semi-aggressive

A school can calm them down but its not worth overloading a tank with them.

As well there chasing stresses the fish causing ick break outs in the tank with is just a bother.

    i'd skip it.

    good luck!!!

  4. Tiger barbs are terrible fin nippers unless kept in schools of 6-8+.  The angelfish and gouramis won't last long with tiger barbs and neither will the guppies, especially the males.  The mollies, platies, and tetras should be fine as they are faster moving fish and don't have the trailing fins such as the angelfish.

  5. Gourami and Angelfish, yes they would have a go at the barbels, mollies, platies and tetra would be OK, but male Guppies wouldn't last long.

You need a shoal of Tiger Barbs and that keeps their aggression to themselves, but you shouldn't put slow swimming fish in their tank other than catfish. They play extremely rough with each other and are a very active fish.

They do best in a barb only tank and have no problems with their own species. Columbian, Serpae, Buenos Airies Tetra can all hold their own, but Neons wouldn't last long.

  6. Take it from someone who owned tiger barbs. They are semi-aggresive fish, so you would need to keep them with semi-aggresive fish. And yes they will nip fins of other fish. They are also very active fish, always looking to make trouble.

  7. yes tiger barbs can get pretty aggressive especially on angels. I believe it teases them the way angels fins just kind of float by. They are just to hard to resist. I always keep angels with just thier own kind
