  1. On this side of the equator they do. On the other side, they flush in the opposite direction. Has to do with the earth's gravitational pull.

  2. not true. http://www.snopes.com/science/coriolis.a...

  3. No. But it has nothing to do with being in the northern or southern hemisphere. It is a widely held myth that in the northern hemisphere the water flushes counter-clockwise, while in the southern hemisphere (below the equator) the water flushes in a clockwise direction. The reason that this myth is so widely believed is because of what is known as the "Coriolis Effect". This effect DOES affect the direction that certain phenomenon follow. For example, hurricanes in the northern hemisphere spiral counter-clockwise but spiral clockwise in the southern hemisphere. This is due to earth's tilt. However, the water in a drain or toilet is too small to be affected by the Coriolis effect. The direction that water in a drain or a toilet follows is determined by the way the water is introduced into the toilet (try dumping a large pot full of water into the toilet) and the configuration of the sink, (the way the sink slopes towards the drain).
