  1. The oldest trees I have ever heard of are the Bristlecone pine trees in California. The oldest of these is some 4,767 years old.

  2. Yes, but I think 'old age' is different for each species of tree. Like you say some live for hundred of years but a wattle tree might only live for ten years, just like animals have different life spans I guess.

  3. What you are asking about is a area of active research. Plants have senescence or aging that is varied depending on the habitat and survival strategy of the plant species.

Herbaceous plants die down to their crown every year to survive winter but some  are only able to do this for a few years while other plants return consistently. Woody plants also have variable life spans.

Short lived species are often early colonists in disturbed habitats. They may be the first to grow after fires or other destructive phenomena. They tend to be fast growing and are unable to compete for the space over time with other long lived plants that eventually become the climax vegetation.

Sometimes even short lived trees find the right place with perfect conditions to extend their lives.

  4. what is dying of old age anyways? things get too old and their body gets warn so things start to fail? every living thing dies...and trees are alive, so they eventually die of old age....
