  1. It is in the Olympics, in the sport channels on television, you have to train just as hard as any other sport to win, you have to be fit to compete (people think you just sit there on the horse, you don't.  Its like sitting and standing on ground thats moving whilst not falling off)  Thousands of spectators watch it both at the venue and on television.  If you are still not sure, go and have a riding lesson and see what you think.

  2. it definitely is!  if you've ever ridden a hose, western style, but especially english, you know how every movement you body makes can signal the horse.  you use your legs to give signals and your arms and wrists to give direction.  plus, there are horse back riding competitions, which by most definitions would mean it's a sport.

  3. try riding one bareback, barrelevents, racing, etc. its a sport alright!

  4. It is a sport! People don't realize how much it takes to horseback-ride. It's in the Olympics so, yeah, it is DEFINITELY, a sport! Oh, and when you're asking a question about horse racing/riding you click on SPORTS first. It is a very hard sport that requires a lot of training and a good relationship.

  5. Sport if you compete

and pleasure if you just enjoy them

    but both can enjoy them

So why would your friends say no ?

    please edit

  6. It definetly is a sport

  7. Ä°diot hvae you ever rode a horse try it sometime!

  8. A leisurely ride is recreation and a 'competitive test' of physical exertion and skill is a sport. It is a sport if it is a test of the rider's skill and the horse's agility or speed and stamina. And not just horseback competitions and harness racing is a sport, horsepulling competitions is also being promoted as a sport, a test of the teamster's skill and the harnessed draft horse team's physical conditioning and strength. Horsepulling puts the "power" back in "horsepower" and is becoming a sporting event that awes and wows horse lovers with great pleasure.

But back to answering your question, horseback riding can be either recreation or sport. And it can also be work because there are still a great many ranches where horseback riding and horsemanship in cattle work is neither recreation nor sport. So only you, not your friend, can define what "your" horseback riding is.

  9. Yes, riding is a sport- and riding horses is one which has CENTURIES of tradition and custom behind it. What else would one call it, I wonder??

  10. sure it's a sport. if you cang compet in it it's a sport.

  11. non-horsey people think its just the horse that does everything, which would make sense. although the horse does do alot of the work, like running, jumping, etc. but its us, the riders, who control them, make them do certain things on command, etc which involves LOTS of muscle.

also, horseback riding is on TV on sports channels and its in the olympics, therefore its a sport :)

  12. The Olympic Games is an international multi-sport event subdivided into summer and winter sporting events.

Horse back riding is part of the Olympics therefore it is considered a sport.

Many people don't realize that hours of training ie running, weightlifting/strength training, etc go into a rider who show competitively, especially hunter, jumpers, eventers, dressage, racing.  The riders train themselves just like a football player would train themselves for a game in a sense.

There are people that just ride for pleasure, these people still use there muscles and balance but they aren't competitive athletes, but I guarantee you that if you put an non-athlete on my horse and expected them to jump fences or ride a dressage test or gallop a couple of miles over cross country fences if they weren't an athlete they wouldn't be able to do it.
