There is no evidence to suggest mermaids are real, and I would suggest that mermaids in the sense you are probably thinking of are highly unlikely to exist. If you subscribe to the theory of evolution humans are a higher and more advanced lifeform than sea life, there is no conceivable evolutionary advantage to a creature half human, half fish. Human bodies - lungs and skin in particular, are not designed for a life under water, particularly salt water.

However, the ocean is a big place, much of it unexplored, and the possibility of mermaid-like creatures, which may have been seen by sailors at various times is not out of the question- although it is unlikely that they would be humanoids or on the same evolutionary scale as humans so that we would be able to communicate on any meaningful level. After being at sea for several months, minus female company, sexually frustrated, tired and at times very drunk, its hardly surprising if the wishful thinking of weary imaginations turned distant dolphins and manatees (who have very human-like faces) into beautiful fish-tailed women.

There are also groups of so called sea-nomads and sea gypsies, living around the far-flung coasts of Thailand and Indonesia. Whilst these people are as human as you or I, they spend a large percentage of their lives in water, have a diet consisting mainly of fish, and can hold their breath underwater for suprising amounts of time.

These people are often perceived as "fishlike" and its possible that, whilst human, these communities are very close to the real-life equivalent of the mermaids of legend.

Yes I totally believe in the existences of mermaids... And there is proof galore just sitting out there..... But 99% of the non-believers out there are so busy being non-believers that the evidence of the truth of their existences just slips by them without even blinking their eyes at the possible proof that would change their mind's..... First off why does our Government makes it so hard to gather the proof from the files that they keep..... if mermaid really didn't exist... Why is it that when all of these foreign deep sea fishing fleets get censored when they report catching a mermaid in their nets why do all of these reports disappear.... And why do our deep sea fishing fleets that reports catching a mermaid are stopped by Navel vessel and their cargo removed before they reach land after they report catching a mermaid...... If mermaids were not real.... And why is it that our very own government say that mermaids are not real.... But their freedom of information act say that they do....Why do they have information in their freedom of information act that tell stories that are written by sailors of WW-I and WW-II About them fighting off mermaid And sharks to save another sailors life...... Why would these sailor admit to having a hatred of a species of animal that does not exist..............
