  1. Get rid of the pit bull.  Most of the time, they are not good with children.  Bull terriers are good with children.  Especially if they are puppies and are raised around children.  Shepard's are great protectors of children.  They are loving, patient and kind.  Just wait till something tries to hurt a child and they come unglued.  Especially is the shepard is raised with a baby.  They will even allow the baby to use them as pillows while watching TV.  It is real sweet to watch them together.  There are two other breeds that are wonderful and watchful with children and they are Labradors and Golden Retrievers.  I have a Labrador and my two younger children use her as the couch pillow.  My 4 year old rides her like a horse.  They are super great with kids.

  2. married, two kids, two dogs, two turtles.

    it's ok actually.

the turtles are a pain in the ..well let's just say pita.

  3. I have two young children.  We got our puppy when our oldest was 2 and the youngest was still 'in the oven.'  It has been great!

She is still a puppy and gets very excited when the kids are running around the house, but we worked very hard to make sure that the dog knew that she was the lowest member in our 'pack.'

It sounds like you and your husband are dog people so I don't think you will have a problem.

That being said.  If I get home from work and the dog had gotten 'aggressive' with one of my children then she would be at the shelter that same night.

EDIT: rrm38, your stats may be right, but I am a huge believer in nuture over nature.  I've seen it with my own eyes.  Two puppies from the same litter.  One goes to a home and is loved and thrives and is very social.  The other bounced around between a few homes until he finally had to be taken to a shelter for his 'aggressive tendencies.'

If you want a dog, no matter what kind, it will take work.  But some of us don't see it as 'work' really...

  4. bull terriers are not the greatest around kids. Its not necessarily true that you HAVE  TO  get a "puppy " either. There are perfectly fine 1, 2 or 3 even older dogs that are just fine. PLEASE DO NOT BUY FROM A PET store OR BREEDER , but especially pet store, ..if you look now, and put your name on list , you can rescue one in that time frame.

Is your husband planning on leaving the dog outside for a watch dog, ?? Or will he be indoors, (hopefully)...Also, older dogs are NOT big on puppies, its like putting a toddler around a 90 year old, NOT a good idea, the puppy is a pain to the older dog, depending on how "old" your dog is, so consider that as well.

Shepards are great too, but shed like crazy! ..A mix breed is best of course, especially for health reasons, and children too. Just do yourself a favor and READ all about the bull terrier, BEFORE you get him , unless your husband is already an expert on the breed.

And yes, i have children and 3 dogs, have been rescuing all breeds for over 25 years, as well as assisting with training too.

so again, please read all about them

and yeah, pit bulls are great dogs, i rescue them as well,..

please at least look, search "bull terrier rescue sites" for your area or further. and at least consider it, thanks, ...and good luck

  5. I heard if you get one when the baby first comes home and the dog is a young puppy they will guard the baby and be friendly and not get jealous

  6. First of all Crystal LeeAnn's post made me laugh. She says dont get a pitbull then talks details about other breeds and how they are good with children. All the things she said: using the dog as a pillow, riding them like a horse, ect. is something my 3 yr old does to our pitbull. lmao!

But anyways, there is nothing wrong with getting a bull terrier when you have children. My own personal experience: we got ours after our daughter was 3 months old so he knew it was her house and she was the boss. :) and yes raise them from a pup with kids around all the time.

  7. yes and terriers are not good with children I owened many of them.

  8. Any dog can be aggressive, especially if they are not properly trained and do not receive adequate attention.  Some require a more stern and attentive owner than others.  Honestly, I would recommend not getting any dog unless you guys are going to have the time necessary to devote to properly training a dog and offering it adequate attention/exercise.  This is a lot of work when you're starting out with a puppy, and a baby will also require a tremendous amount of time.  But, that's just my opinion.  Here are the facts:

German shepherds and chow chows are more likely to be involved in biting incidents than other breeds.

Male dogs are six times more likely to bite than females.

Sexually intact dogs are 2.6 times more likely to bite than neutered dogs.

Rottweiler and pitbull breeds account for 67 percent of human fatalities.

The top 10 breeds involved in lethal dog bite attacks, accounting for four or more human deaths each over the last 20 years, are: pitbull-type (66), Rottweiler (39), German shepherd (17), husky-type (15), malamute (12), Doberman (9), chow chow (8), Saint Bernard (7), Great Dane (7) and Akita (4).

Twenty-five breeds have been involved in 238 dog bite fatalities over the past 20 years.

About 82 percent of deaths involved unrestrained dogs either on (58%) or off (24%) the owners' property
