  1. like the article that Gatorade liked to the ECU is an "engine control unit"and controls the engine and transmissions parameters from everything to the timing of the injectors to the hall sensors, the throttle is "fly by wire"or does not use cables to controll the throttle and is routed to the ECU to controll the tire slip or as of this years rules the "secu module" in the ECU.the transmission is also routed thru the ECU.basicly the ECU is the drivetrains "brain"to get the best performance out of the vehicles engine.

  2. ECU (electronic control unit) determines the Formula One

engine’s optimum fuel and ignition settings based on thousands of measurements

each second taken by dozens of sensors and controlled by thousands of

parameters. Electronic radio signals have replaced cables and linkages to give

a “drive-by-wire” system similar to those used in modern aircraft. The throttle,

for example, has no linkage between the pedal and the fuel supply other than

an electronic one. Electronics, in conjunction with a hydraulic system, also

control when the car changes gear, based upon what the engine is doing.

  3. Electronic Control Unit.

The supplied system will be required to control the following:

    1. An 8 cylinder engine, including single injector and spark plug per cylinder, one throttle actuator, pneumatic valve air pressure, two lambda sensors and two fuel pumps.

    2. A 6 or 7 speed semi-automatic sequential gearbox and hydraulic multi-plate carbon clutch.

    3. A hydraulic differential

    4. An energy recovery system

    5. A number of digital output drivers

The supplied system will be required to include:

    1. Steering wheel electronics for switch inputs and driver displays.

    2. Data acquisition and logging capability sufficient for all control, diagnostic and chassis performance analysis functions with fast data upload capability

    3. An accident data recorder

    4. A nominal 12V regulated car system voltage supply

    5. A list of approved sensor and actuator types

    6. A single infrastructure telemetry system

Also it automatically warns drivers, shown on steering wheel monitor to signal wether a yellow flag (caution/no overtaking), blue flag (for backmarkers to let race leaders to pass ahead), green flag (race is on), red flag (race stop), oil flag (oil spill on track), and black flag (to stop an specific driver/disqualified).

  4. Erection Control Unit.

Seriously though, heres an article that explains it:
