  1. I don't know about academic books, but there are several good children's books about adoption.  One that a lot of people have mentioned here as being a good one is Tell me about the Day I was Born by Jamie Lee Curtis.  That would be easier for an adopted child to understand than an academic book.

  2. I was adopted when I was about 6 years old.  Here are some of the books that I really like and find helpful:

Twenty Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Adoptive Parents Knew by Sherrie Eldridge

Attaching in Adoption: Practical Tools for Today's Parents by Deborah D. Gray

The Post-Adoption Blues: Overcoming the Unforseen Challenges of Adoption by Karen J. Foli and John R. Thompson

    Good luck to you!!!

  3. Launching a Baby's Adoption by Patricia Irwin Johnston

How to Raise an Adopted Child by Judith s******r and Christina Lindstrom

Raising Adopted Children : a Manual for Adoptive Parents by Lois Ruskai Melina

  4. I don't know what you mean by academic books. I have lots of books aobut adoption. Read them yourself before reading them to your kids becasue they may ot be written the way you like. I'm picky about the language I use with my kids about adoption. It clearly depends on how old they are as well. One of the best (and most unusual) books I know about adoption is called, "Did My First Mother Love Me?" I don't remember the author but it should be easy to track down jsut with the title. It's a picture book but good for any age -- just simply, but powerfully written about a birthmother and her feelings about loving and giving up her child. It is so very important for every adopted child to know that they were loved by their birth mother, no matter waht the circumstances. This book makes it clear that their birth mother wanted the best for them and gave them up so they could ahve a good life.

  5. The Primal Wound--Understanding the Adopted Child by Nancy Newton Verrier

Birthbond--Reunions Between Birthparents and Adoptees--What Happens After...   by Judith S. Gediman and Linda P. Brown

There´s another...don´t know the title exactly...something like:  10 Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Parents Knew

And...be careful about believing everything you read...there is a lot of trash out there!
