  1. Tutorials-http://tutoringsite.info/

  2. I don't think any institute will allow this. And if at all any institute is there pls check their credibility before joining. Jwellery designing is a Art. And Art cannot be learned through correspondence. This should be learned under a experienced person

  3. Today jewellery design as a career is steadily grabbing international attention. India has produced award-winning jewellery and accessory designers.

If you are keen on a career in this field, there are different areas in which you can specialise:

Jewellery designing: This involves the creation and presentation of techniques of jewellery designing for international and local trade markets.    Editor's Choice

Diamond grading: Gives a complete insight to the world of diamonds, in relation to the four important C’s—cut, colour, clarity, and carat.

Gemology: Deals in the recognition and differentiation of gemstones with regard to natural, synthetic and imitation stones in the market.

Evaluation of jewellery: Evaluating the worth of articles.

Various institutes, all over India, offer certificate and diploma courses in jewellery designing. A student has to take an aptitude test and interviews before qualifying. Even crash courses are being offered to students.

A student can be from any field or background, but an art background does help in the long run. One can enrol after 10+2 to the different diploma programmes.

The course gives you basic information on the different kinds of stones, colour schemes in jewellery, design themes, presentation and framing, designing individual jewellery pieces, men's jewellery, costume jewellery, jewellery costing, etc.

    Work ambience

Work ambience varies with the kind of raw materials used. Accessory designers work with leather, furs and other tough and expensive materials. Jewellery designers work with gold, silver, diamonds and other precious metals and gems. Their place of work is planned to suit the nature of work. Research involves a bit of travelling.

    Personal assets

Accessory and jewellery designers need to be exceptionally creative, observant, cognizant of the latest fashion trends. They need to work with extreme subtlety and finesse. A highly cautious and meticulous approach is required, for they work with very expensive and precious materials.

    Courses and institutes

Most courses can be taken after class XII (any stream). The selection procedure in some of the institutes involves written tests and group discussions.

The courses, mainly diplomas, vary in duration. Check out few:

National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, focuses on designing of precious and costume jewellery and other accessories in its three-year accessory design course.

The JD Institute of Fashion Technology offers a diploma in jewellery designing.

Aastha Institute, Pune offers correspondence courses in jewellery designing.

    Other institutes offering courses:

Srimati Nathibai Damodar Training (SNDT) Women’s University, Mumbai.

Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, Rajasthan Bhavan, Jaipur.

    Jewellery Export Promotion Council, Mumbai.

    Gemology institutes

    Gemology Institute of India, Mumbai

Gemstones Artisans Training School, Jhalana Mahal, Jaipur (It offers courses in grading and cutting of gems and diamonds.)

    Job prospects

Accessory designers are trained as stylists for men's, women’s or children's accessories. They specialise in leather designing/ jewellery designing, etc.

After carrying out detailed research about the accessory they are required to work on, designers create new and attractive designs for their clients. In the traditional, studio-based design sector, crafts people work to prepare each article individually. Their work is sold through local outlets, at tourist destinations, emporia and through craft melas.

Jewellery designers create new designs for gold, silver and precious metal jewellery. Large exporters employ designers or select designs from eminent freelancers.

Gemmologists are experts in assessing the quality, value and use of gems for jewellery. They are experts in grading, sorting and setting of gems in various metals.

Jewellery designers prepare sketches—by hand or on the computer—to conceptualise the design according to the customer demands. After consulting with the customer or the manufacturing team, designers work accordingly, keeping in view the latest trends. The use of computer aided design (CAD/CAM) programmes and tools are made generally to create and better visualise the final product.

Computer models allow greater ease and flexibility in exploring a number of design alternatives, thus reducing design costs and cutting the time it takes to deliver a product to market.

The various career options in different sectors are:

    Jewellery designing house

    Export house

    Fashion house

    Self-employment

    Freelance designing

An export house can help you reach a global market through your designs. Most of you can start your own business by setting up a production house. You can even sell your products and designs under your own brand name. As a freelance designer you draw a design according to the specifications of the jewellers' house.
