  1. No Australian Shepherds are basically the same as Border Collies...size and herding instinct-wise...

Shetland Sheepdogs and Corgis are both in the pastoral group. They are smaller than the Border Collie.

Also A collie crossed with a smaller breed would be a smaller dog with some of the herding instinct gone.

You could also take a look at the Rough or Smooth Collie. They look much bigger but with the Rough that is manily due to their large amount of hair!

  2. sorry no        but you can get a poodle they kick a$s P.S. get a miniature.

  3. You can generrally find plenty of border collie mixes at the shelter,  the amount of herding instict is going to vary depending on the breed mix and the individual dog.   You other option is to get a border collie from show lines.   The are going to have the herding instinct to a lesser degree that dogs from working lines but they are still going to have a pretty strong herding insticnt.   Don't buy and intentionally bred mixed breed especially from anyone claming to have removed or reduced the herding drive from a border collie.  Herding instinct goes along with having any of the herding breeds or herding mixes.  If you don't want to deal with it I would suggest selecting a breed from another group.

  4. Herding breeds, whether a mix or not, will tend to have the herding instinct...that is what they are bred to do.  So, if you don't like the herding thing do not look at a Collie of any sort, all Collies are bred to herd.

Check out some other breeds if you do not like the herding instinct...lots and lots of border collies and border mixes are in shelters, please don't add another to the number.

The Rough/Smooth Scottish Collie is also a herding dog...we have a tri color rough puppy and she is a herder!  They are also considered a Large Breed (not just because of their long fur, they are a little bigger), where as the Border is a Medium.

Check out the Springer Spaniel...similair size but with the hunting instinct instead of the herding.

  5. All "Herding" breeds have a natural instinct to Herd.  If you want a herding dog, then it comes with the territory of owning one.

I have had Aussies for over 30 years and EVERY SINGLE ONE has wanted to herd anything it can.  I feel sorry when my 2 Aussies play with the Lab next door because the Aussies basically herd the poor guy into a corner and don't release him until I intervene.  They also herd each other when it's just the 2 of them playing.

What you can do however is train them not to herd anything you don't want them to herd, like people or kids.

  6. Australian Shepherd.
