  1. Most campers and backpackers insist on some sort of foam pad or insulated inflatable sleeping mat, both for the comfort and the insulation from the cold ground which will suck the heat right out of you through the compressed part of your sleeping bag you're lying on. http://www.prolitegear.com/big_agnes_air...

  2. you dont need a mat . sometime i use one if the ground is rocky or super hard. dont sleep right next to the tent or you could get wet from the moisture.

  3. it all depends on the weather.  I have never used a mat while sleeping outdoors and I've been able to sleep.

  4. An air mattress will be more comfortable to put between the sleeping bag and the ground.

  5. u should buy one of those sleeping mats of condensed foam, they are cheap and lightweight.  its not so much comfort, but it keeps the cool ground temp from oozing into your body at night.  the ground is generally around 55 degrees.  so the coolness all night long is actually what makes ya ache in the morning, not that its hard.  so the mat insulates you from the ground.  also keeps you dry even though it feels dry, your body creates condensation underneath you while u sleep.
