  1. yes you need a passport

  2. Your friend is probably okay.  I think.

You're flying from Detroit to Texas, which is domestic in the US.  You don't need a passport.  However, you need to prove (1) to the airline that it's your ticket and (2) to the TSA that they should let you through airport security.  The best way to do this is to have a passport or a US government ID, of which your friend has neither.

    (1) For the airline, it will depend on the company.  They'll most likely be the same as the TSA regulations, but some often will take school IDs with a picture and name for 15 - 17 year olds (such as Continental).  It helps too if you have the credit card that you purchased the tickets with.  You should check with your airline, anyways.

    (2) If the TSA isn't satisfied with your ID (see sources), then they might put you through additional screening.  However, you should still get through.

For a Canadian to enter the US legally by land or sea (which I assume is how you're getting to Detroit), they must be able to prove they're a Canadian citizen.  Since you're under 19, a Canadian birth certificate is fine (if you were older, you'd also need a government ID).  All this, by the way, changes next summer (2009).

  3. Canadian citizens are required to have a valid Canadian passport to gain entry into the United States by air. Land and sea entry currently requires photo I.D. and proof of citizenship. As of June 1, 2009, all Canadians entering the United States by land or sea will require a valid passport, with some exceptions for specialized travel documents.

  4. You don't need a passport to fly from state to state

    just photo ID

If you're flying between countries you need a passport
