if you are a Mexican and legal USA resident you need a cartilla that can be process in the Mexican embassy  but if you are from other countries you may need you passport with Mexican visa to travel to Mexico plus when you are in the Mexican border need yo process the permit for you car .

You need something to cross the border.  You may be a able to get past into mexico with out one but you DefinITELY need one to get back into USA

NO. you do not need a passport to travel to and from Mexico now.  That requirement will start after summer 2008.  Then you will need to use your passport from your home country, as you will not be able to get an American passport until you become a citizen.

No, you do not need a passport to go into Mexcio, depending on how deep into Mexico you are going, you might need a permit for your car... also, for youself... I went to Cancun for Spring break and got a 'permit' to go into Mexico got it at the border)... I was told I had to have it, but was never asked for it, even when boarding a plane... better safe than sorry I guess..... and the permits expire, both the one for your vehicle and for you... I think in 6 months time... you will have to return it, on your way back or before it expires....

Yes you do, the laws have recently changed from before when you just needed a state issued picture id to now the need for a passport.  Also if you are driving make sure you have all your car paperwork like registration and insurance or you may not be able to cross your car back or into mexico

It is best to just have your passport.  It isn't absolutely necessary now, but next year it will be and the demand for passports will drive up the processing time a lot.

As of the first of the year US citizens will need a passport to re-enter the US. Until the first of the year a birth certificate and government issued photo ID will do to get back in. This is by car or by foot, any other mode of transport, boat, plane, etc. will require a passport even before the first of 2008.
