Solicitors charge £140+ per hour, so it's probably not bad, if it is done well (proper solicitor)

yes i think it is a lot of money did you know if you are in a union at work they do it for nothing

Depends how complicated it needs to be. If it is straight forward then £500 is ott. I suggest to satisfy yourselves get a couple of quotes in.

Not necessarily.  We spent about $950 (which is roughly 500 pound) for ours.  Will pricing depends on the complexity of the will, the attorney who is doing it, and any special functions you request.  500 quid sounds rather reasonable.

Depends how complicated your will is... if you have ex-wives/husbands, children from previous relationships, complicated assets etc ... possibly not.

If there's just the two of you, no other dependants and your assets are fairly straightforward there are a number of 'kits' that you can obtain from any good stationers or bookshop such as the one I just found on Amazon for 7 quid !

No recommendation, but it might be worth a look.

As an aside......

despite my wife having a professionally drawn up will (free from her work) I never had to show it to anyone after she died. Not insurance not work pension, nothing.

OK so we were married (which I gather makes life easier) and no one argued about where the assets should go, but  I was surprised all the same.
