  1. Yes I do.... Considering what an advocate for the space program he's been, along with his education and contributions to NASA, he really would've been a better choice to be the first guy.... but, it was luck of the draw - he was with the first crew, wasn't selected to be in command, so... he got to be the second set of prints on the moon.

It's like being the 2nd fastest runner in the world - it's an incredible feat that not one man in 5 billion could do... but someone else has the title you were after.

  2. He never says so publicly, but the rumor definitely runs around. It was insinuated that this was the case in the episode 'Mare Tranquilitatis'  of the HBO series, 'From the Earth to the Moon.'

Whatever the case, the reason that was used to determine the commander as first egress was that the hatch opened in such a way that it was almost impossible for the LM pilot to egress first.

Like it or not, the physical reality of the lander's construction, coupled with the fact that it was the commander piloting the LM (and not the LM pilot, interestingly) dictated that Armstrong got to be the first.

  3. From the interviews I've seen, Nah, not at all "upset", nor not even "jealous", at all.  Armstrong did, in fact, step foot on the moon first, but somebody hada' be second, and who better than "Buzz", huh?

  4. No, he's not upset, he's happy he had the opportunity to go to the moon at all.

  5. There had been the rumors, because Aldrin sure has more skills in his small finger as Armstrong at all, but the decision who has to be first was also a decision because of the skills of both. Aldrin was the far better LMP as Armstrong could ever have been, and Armstrong already showed during training and his flight experience that he was more willed to end the mission than risking the life of the crew, when things go bad - an important trait for a commander. They didn't see that qualities in Aldrin.

I don't think, he is really upset because he was only second. He is still one of the greatest astronauts, NASA has ever had, and achieved much more in his career (longest EVA during the Gemini missions, manual rendezvous using a sextant, second man on the moon), than Armstrong, who only had one successful space mission (His Gemini flight ended after the craft went out of control because of a stuck thruster), and a few X-15 flights.

Also, Armstrong still has no computer game named after him... And you will never see a Youtube Video of Armstrong punching Bart Sibrel.

  6. Rumor has it that Aldrin was indeed bitter about being displaced for that honor by Neil Armstrong. According to the original lunar landing procedure written by NASA, the copilot (Aldrin) was supposed to be the first man out of the Lunar Module, in order to check the condition of the lander, inspect for damage, etc. Again according to rumor, Neil Armstrong, coveting the honor and prestige of being the first human being to walk on another celestial body, abused his authority as mission commander by rewriting the rules of procedure to transfer to himself the post lunar landing inspection EVA.

But it was really Michael Collins who drew the short straw on that trip. Remember him? No?

  7. There is quite a bit about it in Armstrong's biography "First Man", there was an early procedure list that showed the LM pilot (Aldrin) exiting first, but that was before the capsule was redesigned. The Commander (Armstrong) stood closest to the door and it actually would have been extremely difficult or even impossible for Aldrin to have gotten around Armstrong in the cramped Lunar module when they had their spacesuits on.

Was Aldrin upset about it?  well astronaut Eugene Cernan wrote in his book, 'The Last Man On The Moon' the following on the whole matter.

"Buzz Aldrin had worked himself into a frenzy with his campaign to be the first man to walk on the Moon.  He came flapping into my office at the Manned Spacecraft Center one day like an angry stork, laden with charts and graphs and statistics, arguing what he considered to be obvious-that he, the lunar module pilot, and not Neil Armstrong, the mission commander, should be the first one down the ladder on Apollo 11.  Since I shared an office with Neil, who was away training that day, I found Aldrin's arguments both offensive and ridiculous.  Ever since learning that Apollo 11 would attempt the first Moon landing, Buzz had pursued this peculiar effort to sneak his way into history, and was met at every turn by angry stares and muttered insults from his fellow astronauts."

a quote from Apollo 7 astronaut Walt Cunningham , "We had always assumed Neil Armstrong, who was the spacecraft commander, was going to be the first man on the Moon.  We always felt like it was an unnecessary conflict that was created by Buzz and kinda left a bad taste in other peoples mouth about Buzz making this fuss about it."

any proof beyond hearsay that Aldrin held a grudge about being # 2, well every picture you see of an Apollo 11 astronaut on the moon is Aldrin. Neil took a bunch of photos of Buzz, but when they switched the camera, Buzz "forgot" to take shots of Neil. So anytime you read an article about the first man on the moon, they'll talk about Neil, but they'll have Buzz's picture.
