  1. There's no debate.

    Tomato is a fruit.

Tomatoes are the ripened ovaries of a plant and they have seeds. Vegetables have no seeds.

  2. Tomato is a fruit, but I would ratter it be a veggie because I eat it with salads and cook with them in sauces or stuff them and bake them. Just don't know why they have to be a fruit because you don't make tomato fruit salad or tomato cobbler, etc.

  3. It's not up to arbitrary decision; a tomato IS a fruit because it contains seeds.  Anything with seeds is a fruit by scientific classification standards, such as a cucumber.

  4. Squash has seeds in it and its a vegtable..But a tomatoe is a fruit..So is an avocado amongst what others may think..

    What is a cucumber??

  5. Well, maybe I don't understand the whole "If it has seeds it is a fruit"

I have bought seed packets for carrots, radishes, asparagus, etc.

    Aren't those vegtables?

I think a tomato should be a vegtable as well.

  6. It seems to be a vegetable, but is in fact a fruit, as are green peppers...seems strange but a fruit off the vine continues to ripen and a vegetable does not. That is what makes them fruits and veggies.

The seed therory is misguided, all vegetables and fruits have a seed or pit.  Even lettuce has a seed, and a green bean, so it has nothing to do with seeds.

  7. Make it a vegetable!

  8. I believe a tomato should be a vegetable. Vegetables have a certain taste, and a tomato has that taste. Also, people don't put tomatos in fruit salads, they put them in regular salads with vegetables. Sorry, that was kind of random... :)

  9. It is a fruit since it has seeds, and it becomes a bit sweet when you cook it.

  10. it has seeds so i think they say its a fruit

  11. Tomato is a fruit botanically.  It is used as a vegetable in the culinary sense but nevertheless, it is still a fruit.

  12. According to my Home Ec. book the tomato is in the fruit section of the vegtable family.

  13. Fruit. All fruits have seeds in it. Have you seen a vegetable with a seed in it, I don't think so... well maybe a pumpkin, is that a fruit? Ahhhhh I need to press the ask button. Btw, I've seen on Mythbusters that it is a fruit.

  14. well a tomato is a fruit becuz it has seeds but i personally think it should be a vegetable.

  15. its hard really...it could be either...and hollywood...no vegetable has seeds huh? what about a cucumber...they have seeds....what about a pepper they have seeds...what about a pumpkin...they have seeds hmmmmm are they all fruit too...no

a fruit is designed to be eaten to spread its seeds..thats why they taste nice so they get eaten...a vegetable does not require it to be eaten to spread its seeds thats why they dont taste sweet...they dont need to be eaten

The thing is its technically a culinary fruit....but there is still debate...since it is an ovary of a flower plant its a fruit...but some places in the united state think of it as a vegetable and some a fruit.....it really doesnt matter

but to be politically correct if you call a tomato a fruit...you have to call cucumbers and pumpkins technically fruit aswell
