  1. As a cheerleader I definitely believe that cheerleading is a sport. It is one of the most dangerous sports now days because of the difficult tosses and tumbling involved. Like figure skating, gymnastics, tumbling, and many other sports you perform your routine and the opponents perform theirs then the routines are judged by judges. Sure you're not on a field fighting head to head with your opponent, tackling them at every opportunity that arises but who cares. Just because you don't body check each other all the time in cheerleading that doesn't mean its not a sport.

Hope I helped you clarify that:)

  2. I guess I could see how cheerleading could be a sport. I think since girls or woman seem so "girly" you wouldnt think they work hard to cheerlead, but it probably is pretty challenging, and there is plenty or variety with the squads routines. so that makes it interesting. not to mention the chicks are usually hot lol

  3. It realy doesnt matter what anyone else thinks if it is a sport to you than let it be a sport. Who cares what the world thinks? Its a sport to u!....And yes to me it is!

  4. i like this sport do it looks so fun!

  5. cherleading is a veryhigh risk sport . better atheltes than players on field . better team wotk . players on field teammates correct errors . cheer leaders no room for minute error . intelligence , superior , longer practices , less study time . high g p a . true sport . high intelligence . people jealous . definatly .

  6. It is certainly difficult, and something I could never do.  It can also be something you really enjoy.  But I don't think its a sport.

To me, a sport requires culpability for the actions of your opponent.  I have this argument with some golfing friends all the time.  Let me give you two scenarios.

A: A basketball team loses the game 130-115.  After the game, the coach is asked why his team lost and replies "They scored 130 points.  What did you want my team to do, score 131?"  That's absurd.  The reply is that his team should have played some defense.

B: Tiger Woods shoots a 50 in a round.  Sergio Garcia shoots a 55, and comes in second place.  He is asked why he lost, and he replies "Tiger shot a 50.  What did you want me to do, shoot a 49?" He's absolutely right.  There was nothing he could do.

There is a different level of competition when you are responsible for both you actions AND your opponents action, and when you can only effect your own.  In one the competition is theoretical, and exists only on the scoreboard.  If I score a 230 in bowling in NJ, and you shoot a 220 in CA, for all intents and purposes, I beat you.  You may not have even known I'm playing, and I didn't know you were.  The competition is only in the fact that we arbitrarily decide to both got to the same bowling alley, and play together, but there is nothing INTRINSIC that requires us to be on the same continent.

In basketball/ baseball/ football/ hockey/ soccer, etc. you are directly competing against you opponent.  When you do something right, it is because he did something wrong, and vice versa.

Cheerleading (as well as anything that requires artistic interpretation ie figure skating/ diving, etc.) is similar to golf.  The competition is purely theoretical.  I do my routine, you do yours.  Then some judges convene, and decides who wins.  There is no culpability for the actions of your opponents, and thus, to me, it is not a sport.
