Dhoni is the weakest batsmen in indias test lineup. So he is far from great.

If you look at his averages against the aussies, south african, england, new zealand and west indies, he has a pathetic average, in both test and one dayers. He is only comfortable against spin.

He is  OK  A batsman who lacks technique can never be called great

he has been inconsistent if he can improve this then he can surely be called a good batsman or a good entertainer

Of coz Dhoni is a great batsman he scored well n also he is a good striker as well as most success captain in India.

Dhoni as a test match batsman gets 34.6 marks out of 100. Not good enough. (332nd rank out of 649 players who have played atleast 20 test matches)

Dhoni the ODI batsman: He gets 72.1 marks out of 100. Out of 411 players who have played atleast 50 ODIs, he stands at 51st rank as per my computer.

Dhoni is not a great batsman - either in test matches or in ODIs. His ODI performance is very good.
