  1. if they can concentrate in studies in that condition we can allow, but it is not possible. sorry.

  2. Yes, being drunk during school would be noisy and interrupts the teachers.

    Smoking kills. Duh.

  3. Yes.  School is meant to prepare you for the real world.  When your parents go to work they are not allowed to be intoxicated or smoke.  (I'm not talking about what happens during breaks)

These are activities that are to be done during your own free time.  At school, as at work you need to be able to think and act with a clear mind.  Think about it, what could you learn from a teacher that was clearly drunk?  Would it be safe?

  4. Yes since drinking and smoking are illegal for most high schoolers.  School is like a job for kids.  Adults don't drink and smoke at their jobs.

  5. Interesting subject your teacher assigned....Smoking is the only drug that is guaranteed to kill over time--I don't think school boards should encourage slow suicide even for those students who have reached 18 and can legally purchase tobacco. Plus in an age when I am happy if a student comes to class with pencil and paper--I think asking a student to bring his/her own ashtray could be too much and I don't think schools have extra money to support the purchase desks with attached ashtrays for the classrooms, nor the personnel to clean them daily  :o)

As far as drinking--since drinking is illegal under 21...I think it would be wrong for school boards to encourage illegal activity. ( I assume your high school doesn't have too many students over 21).  Plus, it would put teachers in the position bartenders are in--giving them liability if someone drinking under their "watch" gets into a car accident on their way home--the school boards would have to pay for teacher training so we teachers could recognize how much is too much and certainly, again, schools just don't have the money for such well-intentioned programs :o)

I guess my bottom line is...some students may not think it is fair that they can't drink or smoke during school hours, but unfortunately--life isn't always fair. I think the next question your teacher should assign is if it is fair teachers aren't allowed to drink or smoke during school :o)

  6. Um - yes!  I have a hard enough time controlling a classroom full of normally rambunctious students, let alone drunk ones!  Several years ago, my college accidentally scheduled a standardized test on St. Patrick's day at 9 a.m, and a bunch of the students found a bar where they could start drinking at 6 a. m.  It was obvious that things weren't going well, so the Dean stuck around to keep an eye on things.  Suddenly, I saw him (a normally rather distinguished older gentleman) go up to a student and shove the guy - hard!  I was shocked!  It turns out the guy had passed out during the exam!  So no, I don't think students should drink during school.

As to smoking, this was common when I was in school, and it was not only unhealthy for both the smokers and for those who had to breathe their secondhand smoke, but it was dirty, smelly, and unfair to the janitorial staff, who had to clean up all of the random cigarette butts all over the floor.  I am SO glad that we don't have to deal with this any more!

  7. Yes because smoking is bad and drinking is bad also!

  8. Absolutely!  Nothing more need be said.

  9. Last time I checked, they couldn't drink or smoke at all.  The drinking age is 21 and the legal age to buy tobacco in my state is 18.  Why in the world would it be okay for minors to do either of these things at school?!?!

And why would such a ridiculous essay topic ever be approved by a teacher!?!
