  1. Freedom of choice always comes with some restrictions, it's not unlimited. You're already not permitted to fire a gun into a crowd of people (unless perhaps in self defense). You're not permitted to drive in the wrong direction on a highway. You're not permitted to pour poison into a reservoir.

If Congress has determined that using incandescent light bulbs is harmful (because of increased pollution or dangers from energy dependence), they are well within their right to prohibit them.

As for the environmental risks of CFLs: it's true that they contain mercury, but the amount of mercury is *less* than what would be released when coal is burned to generate the extra electricity that incandescent bulbs would require. This might not be true in the future when we don't burn coal any more, but it is true given current electric generation systems.

  2. It's within Congress' authority, and something environmentalists are pushing without considering all aspects of the issue.  CFL's are not suitable for all conditions, and carry their own environmental risks, primarily mercury.

  3. I do not think it is fair. America was built on certain freedoms, and the freedom of choice is one of those. By having incandescent light bulbs banned, it violates my freedom of choice as a consumer and a U.S. citizen.

  4. Hey, It's me, Chris.  I'm fairly sure that it's fine to ban incandescent light bulbs, but it depends on the resources.  If we have a lot of resources that are avaliable at the time, it's fine to not ban incandescent bulbs.  On the other hand, if we are running out of supplies, like right now, then yes, we should ban it.

  5. I don't like it. However, FAIR is an artificial concept and doesn't apply to real life.
