  1. NO !!

Dhoni was only priced at that amount because he is the hottest property in Indian cricket at the moment. It's not about his cricket talent, it's the fact that the owners know that where ever Dhoni is a big crowd is usually near, so the owner knew that if they bought Dhoni then they would fill a stadium and sell more merchandise. Dhoni is a talented player, BUT he's not worth more than Tendulkar, Ponting etc.

The proof would be that if there was an EPL instead of an IPL, so English owners were bidding for the players. I am sure that if this happened Dhoni would be sold for a lot less.

  2. Nope the money would be better spent on opening batsman or a number 3. dhonis batting isnt involved in the game long enough to be worth that much

  3. yes

  4. I agree with Apple pie girl. The bidding was not proportion to talent evenly although Doni is a good batsman, WK and captain. In this context Gilchrist for example has been devalued.

  5. he is not so worth, but he is very very very lucky.

  6. He is certainly worth having on your team. Chennai SuperKings had to outbid the others, hence the high price tag.

The amounts of money being offered are unprecedented, so comparisons just cannot be made. Similar thing to what happened in football in the late 80s and 90s, players selling for a few thousand pounds started fetching millions, and instead of wondering whether one was worth the money, it was asked whether one was a good buy, simply taking for granted that the owners know what they are doing and the player will pay for himself in time. As the fees/salaries shoot up, it stops being a topic for discussion in the fans' domain, and starts being about boardroom discussions on what makes business sense. The fees are not reflective of skill but are rather considered an investment on which there is an expected return.

From a technical point of view, however, I think he is a good player to get: his batting style is suitable for T20 and his captaincy will be inspiring to the team (that is, if Matthew Hayden's comment of Dhoni having an aura about him has some substance and is more merely a publicity stunt).

  7. nobody is worth the crores and lakhs of Rupees that the IPL have shelled out for their "stars" - it's merely a cheap publicity stunt by which they get good PR and more fans, so better for their business.

Dhoni is an excellent cricketer, and so is Hayden or Jayasurya - but if they had to play for half their market prices, they would still be capable of performing at the same level that they are currently performing

  8. Yes.

  9. One cannot put money in front of anyone. Paying high amounts

is all the marketing c**p. Dhoni is as good as Hayden or

Sachin or Gilchrist. The monies paid is all hyped to create more

interests among the fans and be crowd pulling stunt

This is not a performance based contract, instead it is

auctioned off contract and teams need to pay the players. If it

were to be a performance based, then one can question the

amount and performance. Again performance measurement

    needs to be predefined.

  11. well tats wat T20 is makin in the present context. Dhoni's recent success as captain and fame amongst youngsters has fetched him so much, yet so little for Chennai. Since chennai does not possess a Icon player to lead the side, somehow or the other they are forced to pick dhoni at any cost.

but still Laxman makes the same amount too, since Symonds receives a whooping amount. A teams Icon player receives twice the amount of a player with highest bid.

  12. No,He is too overrated!!!

  13. Personally no. In fact none are that much worth.

But obviously all teams wanted him and those youngsters and the bidding went up. That shows something. His winning streak and luck is high.

And no one wanted Ricky Ponting, and so he went cheap.

Auctions can be funny. Try eBay and see. Many end up overbidding and buying rubbish there.
