I know there is a possibility of rotten eggs but if eggs sit in the fridge for a long time, do they go bad?

  1. Yes.  There is an expiration date on the carton.

  2. yes genius. everything goes bad. =3

  3. Not necessarily "bad" but they're not fresh so don't eat them.  Egg shells are porous and absorb air over time. The air sack inside the egg expands with age so the easy way to test how fresh a raw egg is is to place it in a small bowl of water.

If it lies on the bottom - it's fresh.

If one end is on the bottom and the other is upright (ie the egg is standing upright but still on the bottom of the water) it's not as fresh as it could be, but you can still eat it.

If the egg floats, I'd recommend chucking it.

[Edit: I always crack my eggs individually into a separate container before adding them to anything.  That way you avoid ruining other things if the egg is bad.]

  4. Of course they do. I borrowed an egg one time from a neighbor because I was in the middle of making cookies when I figured out I was all out. I knocked on her door and asked if she had one to spare...she said she thought she did and came back a few minutes later telling me that I was in luck....it was her last one. I cracked that thing open into my batter and it was BROWN. Totally disgusting!

  5. Did you know you can test an egg and get an approximatation of its age? All you need are the eggs and a bowl of cold water.

Gently drop the egg into the bowl of water. If it:

sinks to the bottom and stays there, it is about three to six days old.

Sinks, but floats at an angle, it's more than a week old.

Sinks, but then stands on end, it's about two weeks old.

Floats, it's too old and should be discarded.

For a test just to see if the eggs are all right to use, dissolve 2 tablespoons salt in 2 cups cold water, then put the egg in the water. If it sinks, it's good; if it floats, it's too old.

Eggs act this way in water because of the air sac present in all eggs. As the egg ages, the air sac gets larger because the egg shell is a semi-permeable membrane. The air sac, when large enough, makes the egg float. Eggs are generally good for about three weeks after you buy them.

And how do you see if an egg is hard cooked? Spin it on a flat surface. If the egg wobbles, it's fresh because the insides are moving around. If the egg spins smoothly, it's cooked.

  6. Yes.  If you are unsure about whether an egg is bad, break it in a bowl.  If it smells bad, ( and you will be able to tell), or, looks discolored, than I wouldn't eat it.

  7. Yes!

    :O)

  8. Yes.

You can tell if the egg has gone bad by placing it in water. If it sinks, it's a good egg; if it floats, don't use it.
