Do vegans loose weight?

i have eaten meat most of my life but i am slowly turning into a vegan. its going really good. i havent eaten meat or dairy in four weeks! i weight about 160 lbs and i am fourteen about to be fifteen. when i totally become a vegan will i loose a lot of weight? i really hope i do.

  1. Not if you eat more calories than you burn.  I haven't lost any weight being a vegan, but that's my issue.


  2. I was vegan for about 2 weeks, and I lost about 15 pounds. =) I was only thirteen at the time.

    And trust me, you'll feel a lot healthier when you become vegan. Most people do loose weight when they become vegan. With cutting meat and dairy products out, the most fattening things are coming out of your diet.

  3. Nope, I know lots of vegans who actually gain(ed) weight. Echoing many of the other answers here, it depends on what you're eating, how much of it you're eating, and whether you're exercising enough to burn off excess calories.

    For example, a vegan who eats reasonable portions of healthy foods and exercises regularly is much more likely to lose weight than a vegan who sits on the couch eating huge bags of sweet potato chips and tubs of Tofutti vegan ice cream while watching TV. (Trust me! I know people in both camps!)

    Going vegan is a great choice if it works for you. However, the sole act of going vegan isn't going to make you lose weight. There's much more to weight loss than that.

  5. It all depends on what you eat and why you weight 160 pounds.

    If you are say 5ft5inch and 160 because of your diet contributing to excess fat, not because of your huge bulky muscles, then perhaps yes, you will lose weight, unless you just eat the same foods, but vegan versions of those foods, i.e. slurpees are vegan, potato chips are vegan, most doughnuts are vegan, ... people eat lots of vegan foods every day, but that doesn't mean they are any good for ya.

  6. Veganism isn't a weight loss programme, and there are vegans of all shapes and sizes  just as there are vegetarians and meat-eaters of all shapes and sizes.

    During my life I have been a meat-eater, a vegetarian and and a vegan. At different times I've put on and lost weight on all three diets - a reflection of how healthily or otherwise I was eating and how much exercise I was getting.

When I became a vegan I had lost about 10 pounds, but it was mostly water weight, and it has been slow going ever since, I became a vegan to have a more healthy lifestyle, you still have to watch your calories , fat intake, portion sizes and drink lots of water!! Eat lots of fresh fruit and veggies also!!

  8. It really depends. If you have a lot of sugars and fats then you will probably gain weight.

  9. not necessarily if you're eating properly you shouldn't loose weight unless you were eating a very high fat diet before hand then you may loose weight

    I was a vegetarian (not strictly vegan, mind you) for 5 years. and I gained weight (almost 20 lbs!).

    I had to go back to meat to get back to normal.

    Seriously!! I'm not mocking vegans or vegetarians - it was just not for my metabolism ... left me with a thyroid-disorder as well.

  11. It's very basic: when you eat less calories than you exercise off, you lose weight. When you eat more calories than you exercise off, you generally gain weight. Vegans sometimes lose weight because they don't eat enough calories.

  13. Well i'm vegan and I have noticed i'm getting thinner which is a good thing in my case but if you want to be vegan and retain your weight eat alot! Thats what fun for us vegans! We can eat a lot of great food that will help us maintain good healthy weights!

  15. Vegans are not different from anyone else.  Weight loss is a very simple concept: burn more calories than you consume.  Period.
