  1. some might, but not as a general rule.  protein powders are usually taken by body builders. vegetarians get protein from plant sources.

  2. Protein is in pretty much all foods...even broccoli.  I get mine from whole grains, soy, nuts and everything else I eat.

  3. When I was a vegetarian, I still ate eggs, and yes, I had a scoop or two of whey protein powder a day.

I also ate fake meat which has a lot of protein (though, as a vegetable source of protein, it did not necessarily have the proper amino acids.) Too much soy is not good for you though.

For a pure vegetarian who also doesn't want to use supplements, one has to research how to get the proper amino acids by combining certain foods (rice and beans is the most well known way to do this).

For a sedentary (non-active) person, protein requirements are not really that high.

(Active people require more, and weight lifters require even more yet. I'm a weight lifter.)

  4. What do you mean take protein powders? Some veg*ans make protein shakes with soy or hemp protein powder but they are mostly the veg*an bodybuilders and athletes. Veg*ans get their protein from food...

Tempeh, seitan (wheat gluten), tofu, TVP (Textured vegetable protein), lentils, chickpeas, quinoa, spirulina, buckwheat, amaranth, broccoli, mushrooms, potatoes, beans, rice & beans, apples, banana, oranges,  watermelon, seeds (hemp, flax, pumpkin, sesame, sunflower), peanut butter, soymilk, some premade meals (such as Amy's, etc) & meat substitutes (such as Boca, Gardenburger, Tofurkey, Lightlife, Morningstar, Yves, etc) or the main sources of veg protein, there are a loot others.

  5. Believe it or not meat is not the only source of protein in food.  Protein is found in pretty much any type of food, main sources of it are beans, nuts...

Too much protein can be a bad thing, which is why a lot of people on diets don't eat meat.

  6. We get our protein from food.  Meat is not the only source, or even the best source.  On a per calorie basis, broccoli has more protein than beef.

Vegetarians do NOT need to take protein supplements.  Instead we eat soybeans and soy foods like tofu, tempeh, edamame, tvp and faux meat products like veggie burgers.  We eat beans and other legumes like lentils, peas, peanuts, peanut butter and chickpeas.  We eat whole grains, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables and mushrooms, all of which have protein.  Even vegans easily get enough protein, but vegetarians can also have dairy foods and/or eggs.

Protein deficiency is virtually unheard of in the developed world.  Vegetarians have a better chance of actually getting the RIGHT amount of protein than meat eaters do; most meat eaters eat 2-4 times the amount of protein that is recommended and it's potentially damaging to their health.  Excess protein leaches calcium from the bones, taxes the kidneys and irritates the immune system.
