Question:

Do veterinarians offer payment plans for clients who are unemployed?

My 10 year old dog (a Vizsla) has a small lump / growth on the top of her head, about a quarter of an inch to the left of her right ear. She has already had two other growths surgically removed in the past, and I'm guessing that this one may need to be removed too. I was laid off recently and can't even afford to go to the doctor myself. Should I just ask my vet what my choices are? He & his staff are all very nice people, so I'm sure they won't laugh at me for asking.

  1. only might be possible if the vet knows you as a regular customer. Talk to him first ad see if he would be fine with the payment plan. One veterinarian i knew had always given discounts to people with bad shoes. I guess he felt if they couldnt afford god shoes he should give them a discount after all they too care about animals. No doubt he will give you a payment option only if you are his regular and you never had problems paying previous bills :) Goog luck hope the dog feels better Keep us posted

  2. Some of them will, yes. Call ans ask.

  3. If you have good standing with the vet, and it sounds like you do, most vets will put you on payment plans if you request it.  Most vets have the best interest of your dog at heart, so yes would do the surgery first, accept payment plans for it.

  4. It depends on the vet. I'll need to ask.

Most vets have the pets best interest.

  5. Depends on the Vet.  When i was in a similar situation my Vet. agreed to let me pay the bill  whenever i was able to on a sliding fee scale.  You should't have to pay the Vet all at once either.Said they were nice people so they must also have compassion too.  Don't be embarrased your dog needs you and is counting on you to meet his/her needs.

  6. most of the time yes

  7. I think your dog may have a small tumor on it's head. I know you've said it's had it twice before, so it's probably the same thing. My aunt has a Mastiff and she's got a few of those, too. Nothing the vet can't remove.

As far as the payment plan, I'm sure you and your veterinarian can work something out. I know my veterinarian has a plan like that, as long as you can make a small monthly payment (with 1% monthly interest, which is what my vet charges), they should be fine with that.

  8. You may look into care credit (it is a "credit card" you can get for vet bills.) If you are a good client that may let you make payments, otherwise most places want you to pay right away.

  9. If you have been a good customer this far, it can't hurt to ask.

  10. It depends on your vet.

Very few vets will do "payment plans".. as most people who claim they intend to pay, often DONT pay!

If you are a well-known client and in good standing with your vet tho, he may make payment arrangements, or offer a discount to help with the cost of treatment.

You may also want to try www.carecredit.com  and also www.imom.org also for assistance.

  11. This isn't an uncommon question in the vet community right now.  Ask your vet, they might have some means to help you.  The vet office that I work for has a patient assistance fund which is set up to help pet owners who are having financial issues.  This is a fund that some of our better off clients and staff set up several years ago to help people in need.  Many vets that have this fund do not advertise it much and ours is open to already established clients.  We just ask that the client pay a very small fee back into the fund if possible to keep it going.  There are also some other funds set up nationwide to help pet owners too.  The website below might help you.

  12. As long as you have been there before and have always paid like you said you would,  a lot of them are able to do payment plans. You just have to check with the Hospital! : )

  13. Many veterinarians do offer payment plans.....Most use an outside financing company called CareCredit which offers many different payment options.  Many times, the vet has an agreement with CareCredit allowing you to be able to pay interest free for the first 3-12 months!  You can go on line and apply as well as find a vet in your area that accepts CareCredit.   Go to www.carecredit.com    Good luck with you dog and with the finding new employment.
