Do washing machine standpipe adapters work?

Have a whirlpool washer. Suds spill out of standpipe where drain hose enters only when dumping out soapy water. No problem with rinse water. Have ordered standpipe adapter. $4 rubber piece that goes into standpipe. Do these work?
