  1. ive been told its cheaper to run ur washer at night...b/c less ppl are using electric then...i try to do mine during the evening hours or late at night when im watchin tv

  2. I don't know about the UK, but here in the states they do suggest that you run your large appliances (washer, dryer, dishwasher) late in the evening or early morning hours when electrical usage is at its lowest.  It puts less stress on the systems that make the power.

  3. between 9 pm and 9 am are considered off peak hours here in the usa.  i would think it would be quite the same there.

  4. In the US we do. Many parts of the country have a "Wait intil 8" saying. Waiting until 8 PM saves electric.

  5. It depends on your electricity payment plan. You have to be on Economy 7. If you're not on Economy 7 you're not going to save anything. You pay the same for each Kilowatt Hour whatever time of day it is.

Your electricity meter clocks up how much power you use and this is measured in Kilowatt Hours. You meter spins round measuring your consumption and if you are using the same amount of energy it will spin round at the same rate whatever time of day it is.

If you are on Economy 7 you have a different sort of electricity meter to normal. The Economy 7 meter will show two readings one for normal usage and one for Economy 7 usage. The 7 refers to the 7 hours out of 24 during which you will be charged less per unit. Usually the 7 hours when you would be charged less are from  midnight to 7am, but it can vary depending on who is supplying your electricity. Th meter switches from spinning one dial to spinning the other one when the Economy 7 period begins and ends.

How much you save if you are on Economy 7 depends on who supplies your electricity. Check out http://www.simplyswitch.com/economy7.htm...

Note to other responders referring to peak hours etc. Certainly electricity usage does peak at certain times of day but you aren't going to save anything using electricity during the off-peak period unless there is some system used to measure when you are using electricity at peak times and off-peak times. Sure the electricity companies will suggest that you use your appliances during off-peak periods so that they can avoid power surges during the peak period, but this has nothing to do with saving money for the domestic consumer.

  6. Here in the US we have peak and off peak hours for electrical usage.  I try to run our appliances during off peak hours to save a little on the electrical bill.
