  1. We may as well be clear about that term: sustainable development is an oxymoron. Perhaps not by necessity, but certainly in reality. Immediate profit concerns of most stakeholders nearly always outstrip concern for long term sustainability of the "resource" -- what we like to call natural entities such as forests, lakes, and intertidal beds.

    So, in general, the answer is No, although I suppose it depends (a little) on what you mean by "our" forests. Here's a great piece on the history of clearcutting and logging in Canada:
