Do we need passports to travel from Michigan to Canada?

I have heard many times of changing laws and whatnot but now that it's actually time for us to travel there I cannot find the most recent laws regarding this. Please be specific where you have your info from, because I've seen Granholm proposed soon a valid MI license will be a valid "passport" to Canada too. We will be traveling at the end of Sept.

  1. that's supposed to take effect in 2009 so in sept you should be fine

  2. You don't need a passport to cross the border by land, only by air. That will likely change next year. Call the Canadian consulate in Detroit at (313) 567-2340 to get detailed info.

  3. I think for the time being a passport is the easiest and preffered but proof of citizenship and a gov't issued photo ID should suffice if you're driving.

  4. You can find all the info and rules here http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbp...

Basically you'll need a government issued photo ID such as your driver's license and your birth certificate to establish citizenship.  Your children will need their birth certificates.

  5. That will work, but a passport is much faster.

  6. Two websites I found:

    1) USA Citizens Traveling to Canada

Citizens of the United States do not need a passport or visa to enter Canada, unless they are arriving in Canada from somewhere other than the USA. They do need to have on them proof of citizenship plus photo identification, although this is not often asked for. More information for U.S. citizens crossing into Canada can be found on the Consular Information Sheet for Canada at the web site of the Bureau of Consular Affairs, of the U.S. Department of State.

    2) All Americans traveling by air outside the United States are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States .  This requirement will be extended to sea travel (except closed loop cruises), including ferry service, by the summer of 2009.  Until then, U.S. citizens traveling by sea must have government-issued photo identification and a document showing their U.S. citizenship (for example, a birth certificate or certificate of nationalization), or other WHTI compliant document such as a passport card for entry or re-entry to the U.S.   Sea travelers should also check with their cruise line and countries of destination for any foreign entry requirements.

  7. i think now you do, its a good idea to have a passport anyways.
