Do we need power stations so that we can be independent from the rest of the world?

Not entirely. Eon is building a power station which will be coal fired and importing coal to feed it. As for gas, we can't manufacture our own. Before natural gas, we manufactured our own gas. we extracted it from coal and refined it, but with all the mines now closed, theres no chance of that happening again despite there being about 20 million tons of coal still in the Welsh coalfields.
