Or can we walk, rent bikes, use public transportation, etc. What do you suggest?

  1. No, you don't need a car. The old town is about a 15 minute walk from the Porta Nuova train station. There are also buses from the station to the town. The touristic part of the city is easily walked. You're better off without a car. You can also easily get to other places like Lake Garda (train, bus), Soave (bus), or Mantova (train) by public transportation. Parking a car can be problematic. One of the places where a car is useful is if you want to go to the waterfall park in Molina in the mountains north of the city.

I've lived an hour south of Verona for about 9 years and spend a lot of time there.

  2. As  Conley 39 pointed out, everything is accessible via public transport. The center of Verona (near its Colosseum) is off limits (restricted entry) to most vehicles unless you have a special permit to be in there -- you either live in the area, work in the area or are a commercial vehicle delivering to the various vendors/restaurants, etc.
