Do we need to take the male rat out?

With my previous question.... Like Guinea pigs do I need to take the male rat out? Or separate the babies at a certain age?

  1. Remove the male before birth as the female will soon come into heat after birth and could easily fall pregnant again which is a huge strain on the mother, seperate your babies at 4 weeks into males and females and then i sell mine or adopt them out at 6 weeks once they've had a few weeks to eat normal food without any milk from mum.


  2. Remove the male from the pregnant female or she will become pregnant soon after birth!

    She shouldn't have another litter until 1 month after the babies have been fully weaned.

  3. Definatly remove the male. Not only could mom get pregnant hours after she has delivered he could also kill some of the babies. Sometimes they will do this for no reason. If mom gets stressed she will kill the babies. My friend had a rat that had babies and the mom got so stressed out that she ate off all the babies tails and feet. So yes get the male out of the cage.
