Do we really need all of this to go to China for tourism?

A valid original passport. There must be blank visa pages in the passport. Pages for endorsements or amendments can not be used as a visa page. The passport should be valid for at least 6 months;

If the applicant is going to stay at a relative or friend's home while visiting China, and therefore unable to provide hotel booking, an invitation letter containing the inviter's home address and telephone, and a copy of the inviter's ID card or residence permit should be provided instead.

This is why the swell in visitor numbers for the olympics that the beijing officials were expecting has not happened. Tourists are staying away in droves becuase of this nonsense.

They are now expecting less visitors in beijing for the two weeks of the olympics than would regularly be visiting the city.

You should try to get a visa coming to the United States if you are not a citizen.

The way you are  telling the Chinese process for visas sounds like a walk on the park. on a sunny day.when compare with the visa process to come to the United Sates.

To be honest, China was probably only about number 97 on my list of 100 places to visit before I die. But with all those entry shenanigans you've described......

Well, it's no longer in the 100, that's for sure! I can't be doing with all that malarkey. There's enough hassle in life without that lot.
