  1. You see when light hits the receptor cells on your retina.  (Well, actually, you don't really "see" until your brain receives the information from your retina through the optic nerve.)  Your pupil just allows that light to enter your eye.  Your iris is responsible for controling the size of your pupil, thus determining how much light is let in.
