  1. too simplistic to simply name things and assign a number.

Isnt it a more rich experience to have the kids understand that pluto is out there, how and why we are actually sending a probe to it, (New Horizons mission - started jan 06), have kids understand who gets to name and describe planets, what the current three criteria for planets are, how Pluto meets two of the three - and what the difference between a planet and a dwarf planet are.

So much you could do with this - rather than the simplistic. We are here to inspire kids not have them memorize facts.

*Kid number one comes home and says - Mom -- there are 8 planets.

*Kid number two starts talking about NASA, Clyde Tombaugh, the Kuiper belt, Dwarf planets and Small Solar-System Bodies...

    whos scary now?

  2. on wikipedia it says there are only 8. wikipedia is usually up to date, but some times in schools the text books are old and they might show 9.

  3. We are teaching that there are eight planets.  But, we still discuss Pluto.

  4. We are not teaching that pluto is a planet.

  5. Probably nowadays students are taught there are 8 but Pluto used to be considered a planet.
