Question:

Do window fans do a good job cooling down a room?

I cant stand the thought of putting in the air conditioners yet. we have the window style, not central. Do the window fans actually cool a room down or just blow hot air around? Also, are they not good for people who have seasonal allergies? Or do they have good enough filters to filter out pollen and stuff? am i correct in thinking running a window fan costs considerably less then running a window ac?

Thanks!

  1. Window fans do not cool.

They do move air which can make one feel a bit cooler.

They do not commonly have any filters at all.

They do help when the outdoor temperature becomes more comfortable, (as most evenings), in getting the hot air out, and cooler air in.

  2. As answer # 1 alludes to a fan is not at all designed to cool a ROOM. It may however, offer an illusion of doing so in circulating air, and perhaps creating a cooling effect directly blowing on a human, but that largely depends on the temps of the air the fan is moving.

A most effective use of a fan, especially in a window, would be to have it expel "HOT" air from a room, venting it to the outdoors. That said, the actually temperature still might lower, and if the room/house is poorly insulated the best you can hope for is just moving air.

Cost might be a relative issue considering comfort, and or disorders, such as allergies, but again, anyone with allergies, might want to know if they are in fact from factors outside the house, or issues such as dust, pet dander, etc. etc. created, and confined within a house. In that COMFORT issue also resides ones tolerance level for heat/cool.

  3. They work somewhat.  I use box fans.  If you are only using one.....make sure you put it blowing the air out.....it works better that way.  If you have 2, put on blowing air in at one end of the house and the other blowing out at the opposite end of the house.  I don't know if they have any allergen blockers.  But yeah, they are bad for people with seasonal allergies.  But I have allergies and I still use it........but If it's been a bad day for allergens then I don't use it.  They work great at night.  During the day not as much.

  4. My grandparents had no AC when I was coming up, and they lived in a 2-story house. The window fans were quite enough to keep the place cool.

I can't say anything about the filters on your AC unit, though nowadays the air conditioners are made with some very good ones, usually.
