  2. yes they can

  3. Women are made Dames......e.g. Dame Judi Dench.

  4. women are stupid and smelly.

  5. no they become dames and yes same way with the big sword.

  6. They become "Dame" as oppose to "Sir" its about the equivalent of a knight hood

  7. I don't really know to be honest, but have a star for a d**n good question.

  8. If that freaky sissy Elton John can be a knight, anyone can i guess.

  9. Yes. Dame is the female equivalent of address to Sir for a British knighthood. In the UK honours system, this can be the title of a woman who has been awarded the Order of the Bath, Order of St Michael and St George, Royal Victorian Order, or Order of the British Empire.

Because there is no female equivalent of a Knight Bachelor, women deserving an honor of this rank are appointed Dames of the Order of the British Empire instead. Formerly, the wife of a knight was called a Dame, but this usage was replaced by "Lady" during the 17th century.

In June 2000, Queen Elizabeth II made J.K Rowling (Harry Potter's creator) an officer of the Order of the British Empire.

Helen Mirren (British actress famous for playing the role of Queen Elizabeth II in "The Queen") was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire on December 2003.

  10. Yes, women are knighted.  Dame Judi Dench is the example that immediately comes to mind.

  11. FYI:

The first woman to be granted a knighthood in modern Britain seems to have been H.H. Nawab Sikandar Begum Sahiba, Nawab Begum of Bhopal, who became a Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Star of India (GCSI) in 1861, at the foundation of the order. Her daughter received the same honour in 1872, and granddaughter in 1910. The order was open to "princes and chiefs" without distinction of gender. (Thanks to Christopher Buyers for this item).

The first European woman to have been granted an order of knighthood was Queen Mary, when she was made a Knight Grand Commander of the same order, by special statute, in celebration of the Delhi Durbar of 1911. She was also granted a knighthood in 1917, when the Order of the British Empire was created (the first order explicitly open to women). The Royal Victorian Order was opened to women in 1936, the Order of Bath and Saint Michael and Saint George in 1965 and 1971 respectively. Queen consorts have been made Ladies of the Garter since 1901 (Queens Alexandra in 1901, Mary in 1910, Elizabeth in 1937). The first non-Royal woman to be made Lady Companion of the Garter was Lavinia, duchess of Norfolk in 1990 (†1995), the second was Baroness Thatcher in 1995 (post-nominal: LG). On Nov. 30, 1996, Marion Ann Forbes, Lady Fraser was made Lady of the Thistle, the first non-Royal woman (post-nominal: LT).

  12. nope i dont think women can be knights

  13. Yes, males are referred to as Sir and women are referred to as Dame. The next step up is Lord and Lady. The Queen does indeed confer knighthood.

  14. Yes, but they are called a Dame instead of a Knight.

  15. Queen Elizabeth II made Anita Roddick a Dame, the female equivalent of a knight, in 2003.

  16. They are made a Dame. A similar process. So to answer your question - yeah but no.

  17. Yes women can be knighted too. They can be sirs, dames, and ladies.
