Do women in the UK get knighted? Does Her Majesty the Queen bestowed knighthood on women? How can this be? I thought knighthood is for men only.

Are the women also called Sir .....?

  1. no = knights are male.

    woeman can become 'Dame'

likd Dame Margot Fonteyn, Dame Judi Dench.

  2. Yes, dame.

  3. In most orders of chivalry women members are called 'Dame', but in the orders of the Garter and the Thistle (the two highest, and last to admit women, in the 1980s) they are called 'Lady', as in 'Lady Marion Fraser'.

  4. Yes, they're called a Dame.

  5. Knighthoods are for men only, women get Damehoods. They can use the title "Dame" just a knights can use "Sir". The only difference is they are not touched on each shoulder with a sword like most men.

  6. only a male knight of British birth can be called Sir

(Americans who Her Majesty  Knights cannot be called  Sir, only British knights are called sir...)

why do i have 2 thumbs down? are americans pissed that their not british anymore? suck it up yanks!

  7. Dame is the female equivalent of address to Sir for a British knighthood. In the UK honours system, this can be the title of a woman who has been awarded the Order of the Bath, Order of St Michael and St George, Royal Victorian Order, or Order of the British Empire. Because there is no female equivalent of a Knight Bachelor, women deserving an honour of this rank are appointed Dames of the Order of the British Empire instead. Formerly, the wife of a knight was called a Dame, but this usage was replaced by "Lady" during the 17th century. The ceremony for a woman being knighted is the same as knighting a man, however, a woman will be called the "Dame Grand Cross" rather than the "Knight Grand Cross" traditionally for men.

  8. Certainly------they are awarded with the title of Dame.
