I am wanting to be a police officer, but I did have a few questions. Do you have to have a certain "code". All the women officers around here never have on any makeup, there hair is always tied back, etc. Are you not allowed to have your hair down or is it just thier preference? what about jewlery? Can you have earings, I have a few ear piercings too...thanks

  1. Yes, their is a certain dress code we have to follow. Hair is pulled back usually in bun. As far as make-up, we can use it. Earrings are not allowed only studs, not hoop. All this is implied on us due to our safety on the road. If we have our hair down, get in a struggle and suspect will have that advantage....Good luck!

  2. It depends on the department. I know female officers who wear make-up, and that's more of a personal choice. However, as far as hair is concerned, female officers typically tie long hair back in pony tails or cut their hair very short. This is typically due to the nature of the work. Most officers will have a radio pinned to their shoulder so your hair could get in the way. Jewelry is the same way. Many officers wear necklaces and tuck them into their uniform. As far as earrings are concerned, studs should be alright, but you wouldn't want to wear anything that someone could grab and pull on in case you're in a scuffle. It's pretty standard that with the exception of a watch most officers (male or female) do not wear any jewelry. You also have to consider that you're in the public eye and should be presentable at all times.

  3. Agencies are going to generally have grooming standards and uniform regulations in place. It's going to be a departmental thing however, so I couldn't tell you what the deal is in your area. The hair pulled back is not only for appearance, it's also a safety issue.

  4. Yes, both men and women have dress standards.  We have to pull our hair up and off the collar, you can wear makeup, not heavy though, and you can wear earrings, but not dangling ones, like hoops. Only studs, because that is also a safety issue. Good luck to you.

  5. you can check with the local police department of requirement of their officers dress code

  6. Yes, they have a dress code, it is established by the department so it will vary.

Common requirements will be to have your hair up off your collar, no loose jewelry, and conservative make up.

You won't want your hair down, even if they allow it. It it easy to grab during an altercation.

  7. I am fairly certain that you have to have your hair up but i believe you can wear jewelry... though it may not be a smart idea just in case... jewelry can get torn out if you get in a scuffle. And they have to be like studs or sleepers... i.e no danglies.

I dont think they have a make-up policy tho i assume if you turn up with more make-up on than a hooker then they might say something to you :P

I am talking about NSW Aust Police.

  8. I'm not a police officer, but in my line of work were not that different. If you have long hair it needs to be pulled back, safety reasons. As for jewelry, studs and your wedding ring or ok. Make-up needs to be toned down. It's mostly for safety issues.

Myself, I don't wear jewelry not even my wedding ring while at work.

  9. Yes there are dress codes.  I've never had to worry about them.   I don't wear make-up to begin with so that's not an issue.  I believe I can wear studs if I want to, but I'd rather not.  If I'm in a fight I really don't need my ear getting ripped.  No necklaces or rings either, don't need them getting caught or someone grabbing them.  Only jewelry I wear is a watch that can take a beating. I have very long hair, all the way down my back, I french braid it and keep it in a bun.  I don't need it getting in my way or someone trying to grab it.  As you might have noticed most of the above are safety issues.  Different departments have different standards, ask the departments your interested in what their rules are.
